Titanium has a small specific gravity (4.5), high strength, good resistance to high and low temperatures, and excellent crack resistance and corrosion resistance in wet chlorine gas. The mechanical properties and welding of titanium are related to the purity of it. The higher the purity, the better the performance, while the lower the purity, the worse the plasticity and toughness of the material. Titanium has a strong activity with a temperature above 300 °C, and it absorbs hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen atoms at high temperatures, making the material brittle.

Cleaning before welding -- Use a roller machine to drill the groove, and a wire brush to polish the scale, grease, burrs, dust, etc. within 25 mm of both sides, and then wipe with acetone or ethanol.

Welding protection -- When protecting, one person should protect the top with a shield, and the other person should protect the underside with another shield. The protector must cooperate with the welder. After welding, wait until the weld is cooled before releasing the protection. Pay special attention to the protection of the back when single-sided welding, double-sided molding. If there is no protection, the soldering fluid will not flow, and there will be no molding.

When welding a pressure vessel, the weld should have enough clearance of 3-5mm to facilitate the formation of the arc pit. Lower the tungsten electrode of the torch and keep continuity and stability when moving welding wires. One should always observe the depth of the welding pool and the flow of soldering liquid. In addition, the current should be adjusted according to the regulations, overcurrent is prohibited. When welding twice, it is necessary to leave a certain cooling time, so that the surface temperature drops below 200 °C, otherwise crack embrittlement is easy to occur. Besides, the area should be dry and free of dust. The wind speed of the welding site needs to be less than 2 m/s to prevent causing the arc to be unstable.

The material of processing titanium pressure vessel should meet the requirements of toughness, strength, flexibility, etc. Each titanium plate must be adjusted. When the material is cut, the size is reduced and the scraps are eliminated. If it is too large, use a shearing machine when cutting the plate. (Try to avoid gas cutting.) After cutting the plate, use the chamfering machine to punch the groove. After the initial forming of the coiling machine, the weld seam should be concave inside, which is convenient for later forming.

Titanium plate maintenance and processing are quite different, mainly due to environmental factors, material changes, etc. If it cannot adopt double-sided protection, use single-sided protection with small current instead. Welding cracks cannot be welded directly in the original weld, but should be carried out by means of patching.
